Full Course Description
For decades, women were systematically excluded from clinical trials. The result was a body of medical evidence built on male physiology — then applied to women anyway. The gaps that created are still being filled.
This 15-week course with Sara Woods is designed to fill them.
Women's Health: From Margins to Medicine begins where the story actually starts — with the historical exclusion of women from medical research and its downstream consequences for diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. From that foundation, the course builds a comprehensive, systems-level understanding of female physiology across the entire lifespan: puberty through menopause, reproductive health through cardiovascular risk, thyroid and adrenal function through autoimmune disease.
This is not a survey course. Each week goes deep. Students examine the biological and hormonal differences that shape how women experience illness, what symptoms look like, and how interventions work differently in female physiology. Alongside the conventional science, the course integrates nutritional medicine, herbal therapeutics, and lifestyle approaches — giving students a genuinely complete clinical picture rather than a conventional-only or alternative-only perspective.
Topics include PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid dysfunction, osteoporosis, cardiovascular risk in women, postpartum mental health, pelvic floor, sexual health, breast and ovarian cancer screening, autoimmune conditions that disproportionately affect women, and the emerging research on sex-specific disease presentation.
The course closes with case studies, patient-centered application, and a forward-looking session on advocacy and research equity.
Who this course is for: Practitioners seeking a rigorous integrative women's health foundation. Nurses, midwives, and health coaches who work primarily with female patients. Researchers who want clinical context. Women who want to understand their own physiology at depth.
